LPX Protocol
The Lean Packet eXchange (LPX) Protocol is a proprietary standard written by Ximeta Corporation. It is specifically used to manage access to its Network Direct Attached Storage (NDAS) product.

Function

A PC has a number of drives, usually labelled "A:," "C:," "D:" and "E:." NDAS adds to this scenario a storage drive which appears to be locally resident, but is, in fact, accessed across a network and is not directly attached to the computer. LPX is the operating system which manages the access transactions to data on a remote drive.
Naming

The concept of "Network Direct Attached Storage" is a conflict in terms. Within Information Technology, storage falls into two categories: "Network Attached Storage" and "Direct Attached Storage." NDAS's name implies it belongs in both categories, which isn't possible. LPX file access procedures are implemented on a chip and not a computer, it bypasses the operating system and accesses data blocks directly. This puts it in the category: Storage Attached Network (SAN).

Communication Method

LPX uses the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) architecture. It uses Ethernet connections for the physical media.
