Why Would Many Copies of Apache.Exe Be Running?

Why Would Many Copies of Apache.Exe Be Running? thumbnail
Seeing multiple versions of a background service causes concern for many computer users.

Since April 1995, the Apache Web server program has provided a continually-revised, free resource for running a Web server. Available on Microsoft Windows, this program appears as "Apache.exe" under "Services."

  1. Standard Apache Installation

    • Since version 2.2, a properly functioning version of Apache Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP) server should appear twice under the "Services" in Microsoft Windows. This is because Apache opens one instance as the "parent" program and a second process is the "child" to handle client requests. If you have knowingly installed the Apache HTTP server, you should see "apache.exe" twice.

    Other Valid Programs

    • Some programs that deal with network management will install a version of Apache as part of their normal operation. Users with the NVidia Forceware Network Manager have found Apache.exe running under their service. Depending on the version, only one to two instances should appear. If you did not intend to install Apache, check with the manufacturer of any network hardware installed on your PC.

    Malicious Software

    • It is possible for Apache.exe to be installed as part of an intrusion on the host system. Though the Apache executable is not documented as itself, malicious software, a Web server running in the background can leave a PC open to a variety of attacks from the World Wide Web. If you have not installed the apache.exe server or any software that uses Apache, it would be wise to run a full virus and malware scan or bring the PC to an experienced technician for review.
