Pediatric Seizures & Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic care is used to treat misalignment of bones in the human body that can cause problems with communication between the human brain and the rest of the body. Blocked lines of communication around the body affect the central nervous system and in some cases can lead to seizure disorders in adults and children.

  1. Chiropractic

    • Chiropractic adjustments have been used to successfully treat some patients suffering from pediatric seizures, according to Epilepsy Ontario. A lack of specific research on the subject of seizure disorders and chiropractic adjustments has led to the subject becoming controversial, with some chiropractors refusing to treat patients with seizure disorders. Chiropractors do not treat the seizures directly but attempt to realign bones within the body to unblock communications sent from the brain to the body.

    Seizures

    • There are a variety of types of seizures ranging from infantile muscle spasms to petit and grand mal seizures. Grand mal seizures are characterized by a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions, according to the Mayo Clinic. Neurological conditions causing seizures, such as epilepsy and cerebral palsy are often caused in children by nervous system malfunctions that may be improved or stopped completely with chiropractic adjustments.

    Adjustment

    • A chiropractic adjustment is a method of realigning, in the correct position, bones in the body that have aligned themselves incorrectly. A chiropractic doctor applies pressure to the incorrectly aligned bone to free it from the wrong position. A common misconception of chiropractic adjustment is that the doctor aligns the bone to the correct position, in fact the chiropractor simply frees the bone, which realigns itself over time.
