Orchids are plants distinguished by their brightly colored flowers and tall stalks. They grow in a variety of climates. There are many varieties adapted for use as ornamental houseplants. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Light Requirements

    • Orchids do well in bright light areas but cannot tolerate much direct sun. Too much sun burns its foliage. They prefer temperatures between 55 and 90 degrees F during the day and 10 to 20 degrees less at night.

    Humidity

    • The University of Illinois states that the orchid requires high humidity. They prefer a humidity that ranges between 40 to 80 percent.

    Potting

    • Choose a potting soil that is meant specifically for orchids. These mixes tend to have peat moss, perlite, sand or shredded fir bark in them, which provides adequate drainage and good air penetration.
