Lavender Plants for Zone 4

Hardy lavender is lovely grown in large groups.

The English lavenders, Hidcote and Munstead, are both very hardy and perform well in zone 4. Lavender is native to the hot, dry areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and few will survive through northern winters. English lavenders are cold-hardy. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Soil

    • Lavender will grow in a variety of soils, but performs best in sandy soil. The soil needs to be well drained and drier than the soil in other areas of the garden. Let the rain water these herbs, rather than using the garden hose.

    Location

    • Hidcote and Munstead lavender will form an 18-inch mound, so it's necessary to plant them 20 inches apart or away from other plants. This allows air to circulate around them to keep them dry. Lavender should not be planted under bushy shrubs that could shade them, but are suitable as edging plants.

    Pruning

    • Remove the spent flower heads in the fall. Lavender is a shrubby plant and can incur some winter die-back. In early spring, prune away any dead or twiggy stems. Prune it to a mound shape, but only cut it back to new growth. If it's over-pruned, it will offer fewer flowers in mid-summer.
