Income Guidelines for a Michigan Pell Grant

Income Guidelines for a Michigan Pell Grant thumbnail
Pell Grants help fund college for low-income individuals.

Because the Pell grant is a federally funded grant, there is no difference in the income requirements for future students living in different states. Michigan residents have the same requirements as everyone else in the U.S.

  1. Income

    • According to The Pell Grant, students who have a total family income of no more than $50,000 can apply for a Pell grant, though most Pell funding is awarded to students who have a family income of less than $20,000.

    Considerations

    • Pell grants are not awarded solely on income. You must be an undergraduate student (or a student pursuing an initial professional degree), meet residency requirements, be in a certificate or degree program from an eligible university, not have any student loans in default and maintain a drug-free record.

    Residency

    • To meet residency requirements, you must be a U.S. citizen, national or eligible non-citizen. According to The Pell Grant, eligible non-citizens include permanent residents with an Alien Registration Card I-551, conditional permanent residents with an I-551C card or individuals who possess Arrival Departure Record I-94 from the Immigration and Naturalization Service with an asylum granted, parole, refugee or entrant from Cuba or Haiti designation.
