When I Use a Network Splitter Can I Use Both Computers at the Same Time?

A network splitter allows you to connect two computers to one network cable, rather than running two cables from your router to your network hub. You can usually use both computers at the same time, but there are some exceptions.

  1. How it Works

    • Networks have hubs. Every computer connected to the network needs to plug into the hub. If you have two computers in the same room, it is easier to just run one cable to the room and run both computers to a network splitter attached to it rather than run two cables into the room separately.

    When it Works

    • You can use both computers as long as there is room on the hub. If you have a four-computer hub, and plug three computers into it, two of which use a network splitter, then you can use all three of those computers at the same time.

    When it Doesn't

    • You can't use both computers at the same time if you are going past the hub's capacity. If you have a four-computer hub, you cannot add a fifth computer through a network splitter. The hub cannot handle the extra computer, so you will not be able to use both computers attached to the splitter at the same time.
