Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), is a business tool that looks to aggregate and integrate business information from different business areas, such as payroll and production, within an organization. The aim is to ensure that all parts of the business can communicate seamlessly.

Historically different business functions used independent software systems. Originally developed in the 1990s ERP was initially only viable for very large companies as the costs were prohibitive. It was developed to combat the difficulties companies faced in getting accurate information from its different business areas. The systems used by HR, Payroll, Logistics, Manufacturing and Procurement were often unrelated and too business specific to offer companies a holistic view of the business as a whole. ERP was developed to be a single platform that all businesses could utilize, allowing companies to better analyze costs, respond to changing business requirements, offer more informed decision making and providing an integrated systems that satisfies all users.

ERP gives better controls and speed for business transactions. The main suppliers of ERP systems are Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, Netsuite, CDC Software, IBM, Sage Syspro and Epicor. There are other providers in the marketplace that offer ERP solutions for smaller organizations.
