Heat maps use colors to represent different values.

Like standard-form maps, heat maps are graphical representations of relationships between elements, such as regions and objects, in an area of space. Unlike standard maps, heat maps display values using colors.

  1. Variables

    • Heat maps show a relationship between variables, or values that change based on the scope of a set of operations or equations. These values are represented by various colors, as opposed to number or image values. Heat map colors often represent a theme associated with a particular geographic area.

    Types

    • Web heat maps show where on a website visitors are most likely to scan. Mosaic plot heat maps are tiled maps that represent a multi-tiered table of data. Mosaic maps contain rectangular regions organized in a hierarchical pattern. Biology heat maps, used in molecular biology applications, represent gene levels across comparable samples.

    Software Applications

    • The statistics programming language R contains functions that can create heat maps. ESPN Gamecast uses heat maps to display how much time certain players spend in certain areas of the field during soccer games.
