Economic times are hard and green is in. People are trying to both save money and be environmentally friendly. Many are dusting off bicycles and leaving their cars in the garage. But what about those hills? Attaching small electric motors to standard bicycles to help get them over the tough spots is becoming all the rage.

Electric bike projects are springing up in the garages of tinkerers all over the world, and these tinkerers are on the Internet sharing their successes and failures with others. Some people are even trying to incorporate green methods of charging their electric bike's battery with solar cells or wind.
Municipalities

The town of Adelaide Hills, South Australia, Australia, has arranged to loan residents electric bike conversion kits to give them a taste of the ease of an electricity-assisted bike ride. They are hoping their citizens will then invest in this new greener form of transportation on a permanent basis.

The interest in electric bikes extends to large companies. Panasonic and Yamaha have been providing electric units for bikes for many years. However the competition is heating up. Bosch and Cannondale have put their resources together in hopes of coming up with a superior electric bike, and Volkswagen is also looking at the potential of electric bikes.
