What Is the Meaning of Construction Technology?

Save

Construction technology means the study of the methods and equipment used to build structures. Students who are introduced to the field are taught skills in engineering and construction, as well as in business and construction management.

Features

  • Studies in construction technology requires taking courses in the basics of engineering, site inspection, environmental issues, management of construction workers, analysis of architectural plans and interpretation of building codes. Most of the studies are performed in classrooms and laboratories, but students are introduced to the trade through internships with on-site work experience.

Types

  • Approximately 200 colleges and universities offer construction technology studies in the U.S. (as of 2010). Studies and certification should be undertaken only at colleges or universities approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. While all training providers teach general construction technology, some require students to specialize within a construction trade such as bricklaying, ground working, electrical engineering or carpentry.

Potential

  • Studies in construction technology can last from two to four years, depending on the degree, school and specialization. Graduates will usually be employed in construction management or as building inspectors. Engineering companies, surveyors and architects also are in need of construction technology graduates.
