Optometric Assistant Online Training

Optometric assistants conduct diagnostic vision tests.

Optometric assistants aid licensed optometrists in routine aspects of patient care. In addition to hands-on assistance, clerical work and record-keeping are also among the daily tasks of vision care assistants. A certified assistant may also work in a laboratory assembling glasses and filling prescriptions.

Certification

The Commission on Paraoptometric Certification is the accrediting agency to vision care assistants. The organization hires an outside testing service to review certification examinations. The paraprofessional certification is not legally required for employment but offers a formal designation of optometry knowledge. The test can be taken online for a fee. Successful students are issued a certificate and achievement pin.

Technical Diplomas

Technical diplomas for optometric assistants typically last four semesters. Vision care technology training routinely focuses on eye testing methods, eyeglass manufacturing and record-keeping. Technical training sessions include a study in optometric terminology, ocular anatomy, physiology and eyeglass adjustment.

Associate Degrees

Two-year associate degree programs offer more in-depth training and include a hands-on practicum with a local optometrist. Course curriculum typically includes instructing patients on contact lens care and insertion, testing eye health and functions, diagnostic testing, medical record-keeping and equipment cleaning.
