Flashing red lights and sirens aren't the only safety aspects of police vehicles. Both the interior and exterior of patrol cars are designed to protect both the officers and the community.

Cruiser Safety Equipment

All police vehicles are equipped with red and blue flashing lights and sirens. The bright lights and loud noise allows the patrol car to weave through traffic quickly and safely. Electronic video equipment installed inside the car allows officers to record what happens inside the vehicle and at traffic stops. A metal cage or protective fiberglass window separates police officers from criminals during transportation.

Law enforcement cruisers equipped with safety equipment protect both the safety of the officers and the passengers. The divider between the front seats and backseats allows officers to concentrate on driving and not worry about any attempted attacks from the prisoner riding in the backseat. Video surveillance equipment inside police cars protects the officers against claims of prisoner abuse and unnecessary-force complaints. Tapes made during transportation record any statements the prisoner makes after being read his Miranda rights and can be used during court hearings.
