Registry Setting for Screensaver Times

The Windows screen saver's timeout time is usually set in the Screen Saver Properties window. It can also, however, be set in the Windows Registry.

  1. Features

    • A screen saver's "timeout time" refers to the length of time a computer must remain idle before the screen saver becomes active.

    Subkey

    • In the Windows Registry, the screen saver timeout time is established through the "ScreenSaveTimeOut" value. Change the "Value Data" setting in this value to change the timeout time. Set the value in seconds; for example, a setting of "600" means the computer must remain idle for 10 minutes before the screen saver becomes active.

    Association

    • Any change made to the "ScreenSaveTimeOut" registry setting produces a comparable change in the Screen Saver Properties window's "Wait" time. The reverse is also true.

    Registry

    • The Windows registry stores information and setting for all the programs and components in the operating system. Access the registry editor by typing "regedit" into the Start menu "Search" box.
