Cadastral Surveyor Training

Cadastral Surveyors are responsible for making, defining, creating and reestablishing public land boundaries in the United States. Cadastral surveying uses scientific methods to create and define land boundaries, but cadastral surveying is based on law and not science, according to blm.gov.

Prerequisites

Employers require at least a high-school diploma or GED. Most employers also require a bachelor's degree, and all states require that surveyors be licensed.

Skills

Surveyors work in teams and aspiring surveyors should have good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills. Mistakes can be expensive when surveying, so cadastral surveyors are expected to pay attention to detail. They also must have good enough eyesight to visualize objects and distances.

Education and Training

Most people interested in surveying should pursue a bachelor's degree in surveying. A degree in engineering, forestry, environmental science, geography or cartography are also sought by employers looking to hire surveyors.
