How to Compare ThinkPads

How to Compare ThinkPads thumbnail
All Lenovo ThinkPads use the recognizable red trackball.

Lenovo's ThinkPad line of laptops is one of the most recognized brands of notebook computers in the world. Lenovo groups ThinkPad models together by series with each series having their own advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Size

    • ThinkPads may all look the similar, but different series feature different designs that can drastically affect their size, weight and portability. ThinkPads in the Edge line or X Series are the lightest and smallest of them all, while the L, SL, T and W Series are heavier and bigger.

    Power

    • If you're going to be playing games or running graphic-intensive programs on a laptop, then you'll need a higher-end model with a more powerful processor and graphics card. The W series and T series lines of ThinkPads are the most powerful, sacrificing portability in exchange for power and performance. They are also the most expensive, however.

    Function

    • The L and SL series of ThinkPads by Lenovo are designed to be a combination of form and function; they're lighter and less powerful than the W series, but more powerful and faster than laptops in the Edge or X series. These are designed for everyday use, not for gaming or graphic intensive programs.
