Metalworkers often work on bridges.

The National Institute for Metalworking (NIMS) was formed in 1995 to develop a globally competitive American workforce. The role of NIMS is to set skills standards for the metalworking industry, certify individuals and accredit training programs.

  1. Registering

    • To begin the credentialing process, you must first register online at the National Institute for Metalworking homepage (see Resources). Once registered, you will be sent a user name and password to used when signing into the NIMS Online Testing Center. The NIMS Online Testing Center gives you access to the performance and knowledge examinations.

    Performance Examination

    • NIMS certifications require that you pass a performance examination. This examination involves the manufacturing of a part or the setup and operation of a machine. You can find instructions for how to complete the performance examination by clicking "Resources" and "Performance Guides" at the NIMS Online Testing Center.

    Knowledge Examination

    • The knowledge examination, also known as the theory exam, is an online examination that can only be taken after you complete the performance examination. The knowledge examination must be purchased and taken online at the NIMS Online Testing Center.
