Why People Conduct Background Internet Searches
According to a study done by ADP, half of all job applicants lie on their resume. It is no wonder then, that a pre-employment check is one reason you may have your background checked via an internet service. For under twenty dollars, anyone can check your criminal history, past addresses, previous employers, financial information and other public records.

Security Clearance
-
In jobs requiring a security clearance, a rigorous background check will ensure that there is nothing in your history that would make you unfit to hold a position of trust. These checks include a criminal record, litigation records, citizenship records, driving records, a drug test, education and employment records, military records, a credit check as well as personal interviews with those with whom you associate.
Employment Check
-
More and more employers are checking the background of potential new hires. A simple employment verification can alert the employer to any misrepresentation on a resume or application. This will also give the employer an opportunity to discuss the potential new hire's work ethic with a previous employer.

When Required by Law
-
Since the passing of the Brady bill, a criminal check is required for the purchase of handguns and firearms.
Additional background checks may be done for those working with children or the elderly, those who work in ports of entry or other positions with security concerns.
