Boiler operation requires an operator with keen knowledge of heating or ventilation systems, reports the United States Department of Labor. Boiler operators can work on a variety of different pieces of equipment.

Function

Besides boilers, operation positions can include work with condensers, pumps, air conditioning systems or diesel engines. Boiler operators not only repair and maintain a system, they oversee the starting and warm up of the equipment, as well as the final shut off of the day.

Boiler operators must complete a four year apprenticeship as well as obtain licensing in the particular state of residence.

Considerations

Licensing has four to five different levels, based on experience and training. The license dictates the size and category of equipment the operator is allowed to work on independently. This ensures the safety of the boiler operator, the equipment and other employees within a facility.
