Department of Industrial Relations Division of Apprenticeship Standards

As with any organization offering apprenticeships, California's Department of Industrial Relations Apprenticeship Program believes in the "learning by doing" training strategy where employees "learn while they earn." Every person works along a experienced and skilled worker with seniority in the field to learn important skills necessary to their desired occupation.

  1. Who Sets the Standards

    • Each program functions under standards designated by state and federal laws.The standards are designated further by management and labor organizations. Each organization has a joint apprenticeship committee that determines training standards and supervises trainees.

    Qualifications

    • Advanced knowledge in a certain area is considered an advantage, depending on the apprenticeship occupation, so completion of relevant classes are beneficial. Attributes such as physical fitness, balance, eye-hand coordination, color sense, agility and strength may be tested by aptitude tests.

    General Information

    • While most programs last four years, they can range from one to six years. Apprentices start at a percentage of the skilled worker's wage, usually between 35 percent to 50 percent and increase usually every six months. In addition to regular wages, benefits covering vacation pay and health insurance are often awarded. Upon successful completion of training, an "Certificate of Completion" is granted.
