Typical Storage Space of a Laptop

Laptop storage space can vary depending on price and the kind of drive used.

There is no typical storage space for laptops, but they usually have less storage space than desktop machines because the hard drives have to be physically smaller in order to conserve space.

  1. Hard Disk Drives

    • As of November 2010, most laptop manufacturers sell laptops with up to 500 GB hard drives installed. Some have two hard drives installed, bringing the total storage space to 1 TB. Larger laptop hard disk drives are available up to 2 TB in size, but they are uncommon and very expensive. Most magnetic disk hard drives in laptops are between 250 and 500 GB in size.

    Sold-State Hard Drives

    • Solid-state hard drives use flash memory, the same kind of memory used in flash drives, instead of the magnetic heads that traditional hard drives use. A solid-state hard drive, also called an SSHD, is quicker, quieter and smaller than a magnetic disk hard drive. They are also more expensive and have yet to match magnetic hard drives in terms of storage space. As of November 2010, most laptops with solid-state hard drives can only store between 64 and 160 GB per drive. Larger drives that hold up to 512 GB are also available, but they are very expensive.

    Future Drives

    • Hard drive storage space is always increasing and prices are always decreasing. While 1 TB magnetic disk hard drives and 512 GB solid-state hard drives are very expensive now, they will go down in price as larger hard drives are released and technology advances.
