Identification

The Southern magnolia is a large evergreen tree that grows between 40 and 80 feet tall. The leathery, dark green leaves are 5 to 8 inches. The trunk and branches form a pyramidlike appearance with a broad bottom and a pointed crown.
Flowers

The Southern magnolia's flowers bloom in the spring and last throughout the summer. Its white flowers have a nice fragrance and are 12 inches in diameter.

The fruits of the Southern magnolia are reddish-brown and cone-like in shape. They produce red kidney-shaped seeds during the autumn months. When the fruits are mature, they hang down on thin threads.
