When to Use Low Beams

Headlights should be operated on low beam at lower speeds and if there is a danger of blinding the drivers of oncoming cars or those driving ahead, according to the National Safety Commission.

  1. Lower Speeds

    • Low beams should be used only when driving at speeds of 25 miles per hour or less. At faster speeds, high beams should be used because a driver may not see objects that are ahead fast enough to stop or avoid hitting them.

    Other Drivers

    • Low beams should be used when oncoming drivers are within 500 feet of each other, and also when another car is driving ahead at a distance within 300 feet. Glare in the rear-view mirror can blind drivers ahead.

    Other Facts

    • Sometimes low beams can become misaligned so that they tilt upward. Is so, they should be realigned so as not to blind oncoming drivers. Misaligned lights can also compromise visibility for the driver of the car.
