What Is the Difference in Transmission Fluids? thumbnail
The correct transmission fluid can help keep your vehicle running properly.

Transmission fluid has gone through many changes, and these changes have led to the production of the many different types that are available. You must always make sure you are using the right type of transmission fluid for your vehicle.

  1. Types of Transmission Fluid

    • As of November 2010, there are five main types of transmission fluid that are commonly specified for use by the auto manufacturers: Dextron VI, Mercon(r), Mercon(r) V, Type F and ATF+3(r) /ATF+4(r).

    The Right Type

    • You should always make sure you use an approved transmission fluid in your transmission. Your vehicle owner's manual should specify exactly which type of transmission fluid you must use. In some cases, different types of transmission fluid may be used because they meet the same requirements of the specified type; for example, Dextron IV can be used instead of Dextron II because GM developed Dextron IV to act as a replacement. Using a type of transmission fluid that does not meet the correct requirements can lead to transmission damage.

    Purpose of Transmission Fluid

    • Transmission fluid is a lubricating fluid used within your transmission to reduce friction and prevent its components from wearing out. Transmission fluid is also used as a coolant and a means of transmitting power from the engine to the transmission.
