Safety of motive power batteries is essential for construction sites.

The Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) regulates handling and operation of motive power batteries in the workplace. These types of batteries are used for powered industrial trucks.

  1. Storage and Charging

    • OSHA requires battery installations to be located in specifically designated areas, pursuant to OSHA Section 1910.178(g)(1). When charging batteries, acid is poured into water and not water into acid, according to OSHA Section 1910.178(g)(7).

    Flushing and Neutralizing

    • Special facilities are required for flushing and neutralizing spilled electrolyte, fire protection and protection of charging apparatus, states OSHA Section 1910.178(g)(2).

    Reinstallation

    • When batteries are reinstalled, they must be properly positioned and secured in the truck, pursuant to OSHA Section 1910.178(g)(5).

    Fire Protection

    • To protect against fire danger, smoking is prohibited in the battery-charging area, in accordance to OSHA Section 1910.178(g)(10). Open flames, sparks or electric arcs should be kept away from battery-charging areas, pursuant to OSHA Section 1910.178(g)(11).
