How Deep Can I Dive a Watch That Is Waterproof to 100M?

The term "waterproof" when applied to watches only means that the watch can withstand water infiltration to the measured depth for which the watch was certified. Diving beyond 100 meters with a watch certified for that depth could result in a leak.

  1. Depth

    • Watches that are rated to 100 meters or 330 feet are pressure-tested to that depth and they have resisted water from entering. This does not mean that the watch will remain waterproof after continual use. The deeper you dive, the greater the pressure or upward force is exerted. This upward force or "buoyancy" is what creates wear and tear on the internal parts of the watch.

    Wear and Tear

    • Waterproof watches contain several O-rings that help keep water out. Every time watches are used for diving, O-rings compress, and this eventually degrades the integrity of the material. While underwater, body movement and accidental bumps can also be potential hazards for leaking.

    Care

    • The frequency of your diving determines how often you should send your watch in for repair. A watch that is used often while diving should be overhauled once a year. Any equipment that is submerged in salt water should be thoroughly soaked and rinsed in fresh water after use.
