Belt conveyors are comprised of two or more pulleys, mechanisms that use a wheel held on a shaft or axle. The wheel contains a groove that holds a belt used to pull or drive the wheel. One or both pulleys in a belt conveyer system are electrically powered, pulling the belt and enabling material on the conveyor to move forward. A powered pulley is referred to as the drive pulley. The unpowered conveyer belt is the idler belt.

Belt conveyers are comprised of one or multiple layers of rubber or rubber compounds. Belt conveyers used specifically for material handling typically contain two rubber layers. The underlayer of rubber provides strength to the conveyer and gives shape to the carcass. A belt conveyer carcass typically takes the form of a mesh web comprised of plastic or cotton. The top layer of rubber in the conveyer belt provides an over layer referred to as the cover.

A beltweighter device weighs material placed on the belt conveyer for quality assurance and inventory purposes. Beltweighter equipment gauges the rate of flow or mass of material flowing over the belt via a microprocessor.
