Algae Cleaners for Ponds
Algae is a naturally occurring life form that will grow in tanks and ponds that are not cared for with the proper chemicals and filters. Growth of algae negatively affects the asthetics of the pond as it makes the water appear to be cloudy and dark. Use of the appropriate algae cleaner will return clarity to the pond. Plants
-
Pond plants fight for the same nutrients that algae use to grow. Adding plant life to your pond can neutralize some of the debris that is left in the water by fish that causes algae to grow. Some plants that can be added to the pond that will help as an algae cleaner are water hyacinth, parrot's feather, water lettuce and water lilies.
Animals
-
Adding additional fish or animals that eat algae can help. This includes tadpoles, some types of shrimp, some types of snails and many small tropical fish.
-
Water Pump
-
Adding a small water pump to the pond will also help decrease algae in ponds, as most algae tend to grow in stagnant water.
Algaecides
-
Chemical algaecides can be added to water to kill algae. Be aware that some algaecides can be harmful to other pond life.
Bacteria
-
Certain bacteria will help break down debris in water and reduce the likelihood of algae growth.
Filter
-
Filters are available to help keep pond water clean by removing debris and fish waste. It's often best to use filters in conjunction with another method of algae control.
