Smog Testing in Denver

Smog Testing in Denver thumbnail
Denver requires emission testing.

Denver, with a population of over 500,000 and known for its picturesque location near the Rocky Mountains, is touted as a green city, but struggles to meet federal regulations for emission standards. Through the Air Care Colorado program, Denver participates in enhanced emission testing for vehicles to help combat the smog problems in the area.

  1. Requirements

    • All vehicles registered in the Denver metropolitan area are required to be tested. The enhanced emission test is $25 and the idle test is $15.

    Frequency

    • Cars produced after 1982 must complete the enhanced test every two years. Cars produced prior to 1982 are required to complete the idle test every year. If a test is required, it will be indicated on the vehicle registration renewal card.

    Locations and Testing

    • Most tests are completed at one of the 14 Air Care Colorado testing centers in the Denver metropolitan area. Centers are open Monday through Saturday, and closed on state holidays.

    Failing the Test

    • Vehicles that fail the test are required to be repaired and retested. Vehicles that fail can be retested for free within 10 calendar days of the first test.
