The word hibiscus is believed to have come from the Greek word hibiskos. This is an old Greek name for the marsh mallow plant, a close relative of the hibiscus.

The hibiscus tree starts out as a shrub and with strategic and careful pruning, it is transformed into a single-stemmed tree. This is done by removing vertical and side branches between the ground and the head level during the first year.

The hibiscus tree can grow to a height of 15 feet. It produces showy flowers that measure up to 6 inches in diameter. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to its trumpet-shaped yellow, peach or red blooms.

The Egyptians believed that drinking tea made from the red hibiscus would increase the passion in women. Because of this, women were not allowed to drink hibiscus tea for centuries.
