New Jersey Police Field Training Officer Certification

Experienced New Jersey police officers can teach others as an FTO.

If you are a senior police officer in the state of New Jersey and are interested in becoming an FTO (field training officer), you need to take a certification course. This is available throughout the year at various locations throughout the state.

Significance

The Penn State Justice and Safety Institute provides training programs on a variety of topics, including FTO. They usually team up with your local jurisdictional officer to give a three-day course that senior officers can enroll in. In addition, the National Institute of Ethics also provides courses in basic certification and advanced FTO certification.

Topics

Since an FTO is a vital part of the educational chain for new officers, many topics are covered during a certification course. Future FTOs can learn about how to evaluate training performance, ethical issues, how to praise students and methods of communication for training programs. Understanding these concepts is imperative to becoming a successful FTO.
