Common orchid tree pests include white flies, a sap sucking white insect that appears on the underside of leaves, root nematodes, microscopic worms that live in the soil, and mealy bugs, a type of wingless, cottony white insect that causes leaf drop and stunted growth. Infestations can often by treated with predatory insects or insecticides.

Orchid tree is susceptible to leaf spot, a disease which is caused by fungus. Leaf spot causes dots or irregular patches on the tree's leaves, sometimes causing premature leaf drop. Remove debris and fallen leaves around the tree to prevent the fungus from spreading.
