Herpetologists focus on studying reptiles, amphibians and similar animals. They study the structure, history and future of these animals as well as how they interact with the other animals and their environment.

  1. Salary

    • As of November 2010, Simply Hired reports that the average salary for a herpetologist was $45,000. Salaries vary for herpetologists employed by museums, zoos, universities and private industry.

    Duties

    • Depending on where herpetologists work, they will focus on studying some aspect of reptiles or amphibians. They help to understand and classify current species in order to better know how to preserve them for the future. Herpetologists also work in biotechnology to apply principles learned from studying reptiles and amphibians to new developments in technology.

    Education and Prospects

    • Herpetologists can find a job with a bachelor's degree in zoology or biology, preferably with some concentration in herpetology. They can also benefit from a doctoral degree which will help with any fieldwork or research they might do. According to Degree Finders, the job prospects for herpetologists are expected to increase from 2008 to 2018 due to growth in the biotechnology field.
