Kerosene heaters should be used with caution.

Kerosene can be an effective alternative heating fuel, but kerosene space heaters require safe handling to ensure proper use. Severe damage or injury can result from improper use. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Adding Fuel

    • Use clear kerosene only. Set the heater outdoors when filling it. Overfilling heaters can cause leaks and potential fires from the wick or burner.

    Fuel Storage

    • Store kerosene in approved containers for fuels. Blue fuel containers have become the accepted color to distinguish from red gasoline containers. Store kerosene outdoors in well-ventilated areas.

    Ventilation

    • Make sure adequate air flow is supplied in the area where the heater is located. Fumes from kerosene can build up causing carbon monoxide poisoning. Open windows or doors to provide air flow.

    Shut-off

    • Always use the manual shut-off to douse the flame. Never move a lit heater because of the potential for spreading flames or burning fuel.
