Xenon Lamp Safety Information

Xenon Lamp Safety Information thumbnail
A xenon lightbulb burn cooler than halogen lamps.

Xenon lamps have xenon gas inserted into the bulb's glass envelope. The inclusion of xenon gas extends the rated life of the lamp from 8,000 to 100,000 hours. All lamps have a rated life. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Handling

    • Xenon lamp bulbs burn cooler than halogen lamps. Cool Xenon bulbs can be handled with bare hands. They have a high internal pressure that can exceed 145 PSI, even when not in operation, which means they can burst if bumped or dropped. Protective hand and eye coverings should be worn when handling Xenon lamps. Leave the Xenon lamp in its container until it is to be installed.

    Installation

    • The lamp should be in a secure, stable location away from combustible items such as paper or fabric. The lamp and its fixtures should be clean and in good working condition. Alcohol and lint-free cloth should be used to clean fixtures. The Xenon bulb should be hand-tightened in the lamp. Do not use tools to tighten the bulb as the extra pressure could cause the bulb to burst.

    Removal

    • Xenon lamp bulbs should be allowed to cool at least 10 minutes after being turned off before removing to avoid possibly burning your hands. Do not look directly into a lighted Xenon lamp, as this can cause eye injury. Spent Xenon lamp bulbs should be placed in its the original container. The container should be taped closed and dropped, to break the bulb inside.
