Homemade Mortar Mixer

Mortar mixers and cement mixers can be expensive to buy, so building your own may be a more practical solution. If special care is taken, homemade mortar mixers can be as sturdy as store-bought mixers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Drum

    • Almost as if made for this project, the drum of an old or broken washing machine is perfect as the drum of your new mortar mixer. That is assuming, of course, that the drum was not the reason for the washing machine's disposal. If you cannot find a washing machine drum, just keep it in mind as the ideal shape and size and find something similar.

    Paddles

    • The paddles are equally easy to round up. If you're up to the challenge, simply cut the blades from sheet metal, but almost anything strong enough to withstand the force of the mortar being mixed and that can be drilled to the inside of the drill will do.

    Frame

    • The frame is perhaps the most difficult thing as it needs to be built from scratch to allow the drum to rotate. Optional here are wheels and handles to make pouring and moving easier, but it all comes down to what you need and feel capable of building. With a few modifications, it could be possible to re-purpose the stand of a grill into the frame for your new mortar mixer. Simply give the drum room to rotate while keeping it steady.
