SCBA: Attendant Training

SCBA: Attendant Training thumbnail
To become a SCBA attendant, you need to take a training course.

Before you can become a qualified SCBA attendant, you need to complete a training course to receive certification in supervising the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus. Once you have accomplished that, you can work as a SCBA attendant on small and large jobs.

  1. SCBA Attendant Role

    • SCBA equipment is used by people who are entering spaces where the surrounding air is either unbreathable or could pose a potential health threat. A SCBA attendant will generally be on-site when others are using the gear to supervise and assist should an emergency arise.

    SCBA Programs

    • Different training programs are available to further your SCBA career. These are offered by local technical colleges or larger national companies that specialize in SCBA training. Examples of relevant courses include visual cylinder inspection training, Eddy Current Service Technician training and a basic training course.

    Confined Space Training

    • In addition to completing a training course on how to use SCBA, an attendant must also be familiar with how to use them in a confined space. This includes how to enter a confined space using the OSHA Confined Space Standard, especially in regards to those areas that are deemed to be Permit Required Confined Spaces. A course such as this requires both classroom training and a practicum outside the classroom to practice the skills learned.
