What Is the MDF File Type?
MDF is a common file extension recognized by the Windows operating system. You may notice that some very memory intensive files on your computer use the MDF file extension.

Media Disc Image File
-
Media Disc Image Files (MDF) are binary files that contain CD or DVD data that has been saved by a disc authorizing program. Binary files include any file format that does not consist of readable text. Thus, binary files generally consist of machine code.
Programs That Use MDF
-
Several disc authorizing programs use the .MDF file extension. These programs include CyberLink PowerDVD 10 Mark II, Alcohol 120%, WinMount International and DT Soft Daemon Tools.

Uses
-
MDF files are used primarily to backup exact copies of original discs. For example, if you wanted to backup a computer game, you would create an MDF file. Note that MDF files can be burned onto a disc, which is not true of all file types. Note also that while the actual disc data is stored as an MDF file, any header and track information will be stored as an MDS file.
