The distinctive baobab is a deciduous tree.

There are several distinctive trees that are native to Africa. They range from the unusual looking baobab tree, to the marula tree, whose fermented fruit is savored by elephants.

  1. Baobab

    • Baobabs are deciduous trees that can reach enormous sizes. They have smooth trunks and when they lose their leaves, their branches resemble roots, giving the tree the appearance of having been planted upside down. The baobab's flowers are white and open at night and the fruit is edible.

    Marula

    • The marula tree is deciduous and can reach a height of 18 meters. They are found in areas from Ethiopia to South Africa and produce an edible fruit that is high in vitamin C. The plum-sized fruit is juicy and aromatic and can be made into jam.

    Mopane

    • The mopane tree is found in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. It can grow up to 25 meters and has distinctive butterfly-shaped leaves and small, yellow-green flowers. The bark has vertical fissures and is grey in color.
