Hispanic Heritage month is a spicy time of year. From tortillas to jalapenos to the sweetness of Spanish-style French toast, there is a flavor for every set of taste buds to celebrate this cultural fiesta. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Mexico

    • Tortillas, frijoles (beans), guacamole and salsa are popular Mexican foods. Mexicans often eat enchiladas which are stuffed tortillas smothered in tomatoes and chili sauce. Ceviche is a popular salad with raw fish marinated in lime juice. Also, chili renellos are a spicy appetizer and are large chilies stuffed with spiced meats or cheese. Tequila and cervaza (beer) are common drinks.

    South America

    • Every South American country has its own unique recipe collection. In Brazil the traditional dish is feijoada, which is a thick stew made of pork, black bean and sausage. In Chile, anticuchos is a stew made of cow parts, artichokes,onions, cocktail tomatoes and spices. This dish originated when colonizers gave Chilean natives the parts of the cow they didn't want to eat, who then turned the unwanted bits into a scrumptious stew.

    Cuba

    • Whether it's a sweet breakfast or an after dinner dessert, torrejas are a delectable Cuban twist on French toast, and involves thick Cuban bread dipped in wine, egg and cinnamon and then fried. Costillitas are Cuban baby back ribs, marinated in sour oranges, limes, oregano, lemons and garlic. Also, pollo (chicken) in black bean sauce, gumbos, and shrimp casseroles are popular dishes.
