How to Compare Local ISPs
With so many businesses and consumer services setting up shop online, it has become almost a requirement to have internet access in the home. Choosing an Internet Service Provider (ISP) is an important decision that involves a variety of criteria.
-
Speed
-
Determine the providers internet speed, which is dependent on the type of physical connection being used. Dial-up is on the slowest end of the spectrum, whereas fiber optic internet is lightning fast. DSL and cable internet options are the most common for mainstream users.
Cost and Extras
-
Internet service packages come in a variety of forms. They may include basic internet access, or they may come bundled together with other communication options such as cable TV or a landline phone. Determine the best price for you in conjunction with what services you actually need.
-
Talk to Customer Service
-
Contact customer service at each of the ISPs you are interested in. Talk to one of their representatives regarding their Internet packages. Make it clear that you are not interested in buying at this time, but simply would like to get more information. Not only is this helpful in getting more specifics about their services, but it will give you an idea of their quality of customer service. If the representative you speak to is unhelpful or vague about the details, they're probably not the company you want to be dealing with if you should have a technical problem later on.
