Phenibut Safety

Phenibut Safety thumbnail
Some people use supplements in an effort to decrease anxiety.

Phenibut is a supplement similar to GABA--a chemical in the human brain--and is used for conditions such as anxiety and depression. However, few studies are available concerning the safety of Phenibut.

  1. Identification

    • Phenibut users take the supplement to treat anxiety, stress, tension, fatigue and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, its effectiveness in the treatment of these conditions has not been established by any reliable source.

    Warning

    • According to Dr. Pieter Cohen of the Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School, dietary supplement companies are not required to inform customers about possible side effects of their products, even when discovered. Since any ingredient having a positive effect on the human body can also have a negative effect, supplements should only be used if information can be obtained from a reliable source that definite benefits are associated with their use.

    Safety

    • According to WebMd, information on the safety of Phenibut is virtually nonexistent, as its effect in humans has not been studied. Anyone considering this supplement should talk it over with a health care professional before adding it to his or her diet.
