When installing the head on a 2.0 1999 Ford Escort, you must bolt the head down in a certain order and to a specific tightness. Otherwise, it will not seal to the engine block.

  1. Single Overhead Cam Torque Specification

    • Tighten each bolt in sequence to between 30 and 44 foot-lbs. Back off each bolt in sequence half a turn. Retighten in sequence to between 30 and 44 foot-lbs. Tighten in sequence an additional 180 degrees in two 90-degree intervals.

    • Start with the center two. Tighten the top bolt then the bottom. Move to the left of center and tighten the top then move to the right of center and tighten the bottom. Tighten the top bolt to the right of center and then tighten the bottom to the left of center. Tighten the bolt on top to the far right and then the bottom to the far left. Tighten the top bolt to the far left and then the bottom to the far right.

    • Tighten all bolts in sequence to between 12 and 18 foot-lbs, then, in sequence, between 26 and 33 foot-lbs. On non-coupe Escorts, tighten in sequence an additional 105 degrees. On coupes, tighten in sequence an additional 90 degrees.

    • Tighten all bolts top to bottom. Start with the center bolts. Go to left of center, then right of center, far left and far right.
