    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2010-11 handbook, the median salary of attorneys nine months after graduating law school varied by the type of employer they worked for in May 2007. Staff attorneys employed by business enterprises earned the highest median salary at $69,100, followed by attorneys employed by local, state or federal government, who earned a comparable median salary of $50,000.

    Largest Employers

    • Attorneys employed by "companies and enterprises" earned the highest median wage in May 2008, pulling in $145,770 annually. They were followed by their counterparts working in the executive branch of the U.S. federal government, who earned a median annual wage of $126,080. By comparison, the median annual earnings of staff attorneys working in local government during this same period was $82,590.

    Highest-Paying Industry

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that staff attorneys working in petroleum and coal products manufacturing earned the highest annual mean wage at $196,190 in May 2009. These attorneys also made the highest median hourly salary at $94.32 per hour.
