Information on the 1955 Pontiac Star Chief

The Star Chief was in it's second year in 1955, and the convertible was the top-of-the-line Pontiac. Several new items were included with the Star Chief in 1955, not the least of which was a more powerful engine and more luxurious appointments.

  1. Types

    • The convertible was the top of the line for Star Chief, but it also came in a large station wagon and various combinations of sedans and coupes. The Star Chief was also known as the series 55, and that came in wheel bases of either 122 or 124 inches.

    Engine

    • New for 1955 was the 287-cubic-inch V-8 engine that produced 180 horsepower. The engine had valves in head, and used hydraulic lifters. It had five main bearings and managed 264 feet of torque. It had a compression ratio of 8 to 1. A two-barrel carburetor was used, and a four-barrel was optional.

    Power Train

    • The Star Chief used a three-speed manual transmission, and an automatic was optional. Suspension was via front coil springs and rear leaf springs. Hydraulic drum brakes were used on all wheels.

    Size

    • The Star Chief was 207 inches long and weighed around 3,500 pounds. The car's price ranged from $1,900 to $3,000.
