Speed Difference Between Wireless & Direct DSL Connection

Many homes and places of business have multiple computers or Internet-enabled devices, and users may consider creating a network to share their digital subscriber line Internet connection. Wired and wireless networks are both viable options; however, both pose limitations.

  1. Considerations

    • Wireless connections can lose strength when the computer or other wireless device is further from the wireless connection point and if there are physical barriers such as furniture or walls between the two points. Because of this, a wireless connection may be slower than a wired one or perform inconsistently.

    Significance

    • The speed decrease that a wireless connection may experience, compared to a wired connection, is impossible to determine accurately. In addition, wireless connections can drop altogether. Users for whom a consistently fast connection is more important than a portable one may use an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet or network.

    Other Considerations

    • While speed is an important factor when the user installs a local area network, be it wired or wireless, other concerns may also arise. For example, no one can connect to a wired connection without access to the network device (router or switch). Unauthorized users, however, can connect to an unsecured wireless network and use the Internet or access shared files. Furthermore, the physical limitation of Ethernet cables (100 meters) may not allow their use to connect some devices.
