Wireless connections can lose strength when the computer or other wireless device is further from the wireless connection point and if there are physical barriers such as furniture or walls between the two points. Because of this, a wireless connection may be slower than a wired one or perform inconsistently.

The speed decrease that a wireless connection may experience, compared to a wired connection, is impossible to determine accurately. In addition, wireless connections can drop altogether. Users for whom a consistently fast connection is more important than a portable one may use an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet or network.

For example, no one can connect to a wired connection without access to the network device (router or switch). Unauthorized users, however, can connect to an unsecured wireless network and use the Internet or access shared files.
