The Occupational Safety and Health Act requires propane cylinders to be odorized.

The Occupations and Safety Health Act regulates the storage and handling of propane cylinders. Section 1910 of the act contains provisions regarding odorization, markings and labels, and proper storage locations for propane cylinders.

  1. Odorization

    • An approved agent must odorize a propane cylinder. This means he adds a detectable odor to the propane tank. This will allow the agent to detect gas in the air. The agent must ensure the gas in the air does not exceed legal limits of flammability, in accordance with Section 1910.110(b)(1)(i) of the act.

    Markings

    • Propane cylinders must be marked with proper identification ensuring the container complies with legal requirements, pursuant to Section 1910.110(b)(5)(i). The markings must specify whether cylinder is designed for above-ground use. Other necessary information includes supplier's name and address, water capacity and pressure limitations.

    Location

    • Usually the propane cylinder must be located outside of buildings. However, this is not necessary if the building is used exclusively for container charging, vaporization pressure reduction, gas mixing, gas manufacturing or distribution, according to Section 1910(b)(6)(i)(a).
