How Termite Inspectors Determine Structural Soundness

How Termite Inspectors Determine Structural Soundness thumbnail
Termites can cause structural failure by damaging wooden beams in homes.

Termites are a soft-bodied, wood-eating insect that can infest homes and buildings and cause structural damage. Termite inspectors can determine if treatment is necessary for your home; however, it will take a structural engineer to evaluate the damage caused by the termites. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Termite Inspectors

    • A termite inspection is officially called a wood-destroying organisms (WDO) report, and it evaluates all damage caused by any arthropod or plant life. The report, written by a termite inspector, notes any visible signs of infestation, including the appearance of visible structural beams. It will evaluate whether or not there is any need for treatment, but it does not assess structural damage.

    Structural Engineers

    • To evaluate the impact of termites and termite damage, the opinion of a licensed, professional engineer should be sought. A structural engineer will observe the damage and determine whether or not repairs are necessary.

    Structural Damage

    • Termite damage is often hidden, either within wooden beams, behind walls or under floors. A termite inspector will not examine areas under floor coverings or insulation and so may not see some of the structural damage. A structural engineer will examine such areas, where sunken patches and sagging beams will indicate termite damage.
