Perennial Bee Balm

Bee balm is also known as horsemint.

Perennial bee balm is a common addition to herb gardens. Also referred to as wild bergamot and horsemint, it readily attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. Bee balm is also used to make tea.

Identification

Bee balm blooms in late summer. Blossoms consist of tubular petals on a rounded flower head. It is available in colors such as pink, red, purple and white. Plants typically grow 1 to 4 feet tall and have a 1- to 3-foot spread.

Planting Considerations

Bee balm is an appropriate choice for flower beds, borders and wildlife gardens. It can be planted in the spring or fall. These plants should be planted 1 to 2 feet apart, as they multiply quickly.

Habitat

Bee balm tolerates full sunlight or partial shade. Typically, the soil should be rich and well-drained. However, some varieties of bee balm can tolerate wet soil.
