Natural Flea Control for the Yard

You can prevent fleas in your yard naturally.

Most commercial flea treatments contain toxic chemicals that are dangerous for you, your family and your pets. If you want to treat fleas in your yard naturally, you do have some options.

Nematodes

Nematodes are one method used to keep flea populations at bay. They are small worms that eat the fleas when they are in larvae stage. They can be found at pet stores, garden supply stores as well as through internet providers. Generally, they are self-sustaining, so a few nematodes will go a long way.

Diatomaceous Earth

Made from ground fossils of microscopic organisms, diatomaceous earth can be used in your yard to treat fleas. Sprinkling the powder in your yard helps to dehydrate the exoskeleton of the fleas, causing them to die. It can be found at your local garden supply and home improvement stores; however, you should avoid the pool grade diatomaceous earth and choose the food grade instead. The food grade is safe for use around children and pets.

Cedar Chips

The odor of cedar chips, although pleasant to you, is unpleasant to fleas. To use them as a flea repellent, sprinkle them around your yard. Then, mow your yard to break down the chips and further scatter them.
